“"Until I Meet My Husband" by Nanasaki Ryosuke, Art by Tsukizuki Yoshi "Until I Meet My Husband" is a profound and emotional journey that delves into the challenging themes of self-identity, societal pressures, and advocacy for change. Initial Impressions: At the beginning, the story was quite painful to read and somewhat confusing due to its time jumps. However, it gradually made sense as it depicted the main character's process of understanding their attraction to men and their feminine traits. From a young age, the protagonist learns that being feminine and attracted to men is considered unacceptable, leading to internalized shame and suicidal thoughts. Key Themes: The book highlights the protagonist's profound loneliness, resulting in risky behaviors and emotional numbness. Their first long-term relationship is fraught with mistrust and emotional turmoil. Despite these hardships, the protagonist eventually channels their experiences into activism, striving for legal rights for gay people. Personal Reflections: While the main part of the book felt overwhelmingly negative, with the protagonist facing one hardship after another, I appreciated the happy ending. However, I would have liked more focus on the protagonist's final relationship and healing process. The journey from self-hatred to becoming an advocate for others is significant but seems underdeveloped in the narrative. Conclusion: "Until I Meet My Husband" underscores the importance of acceptance and support for LGBTQ+ individuals. It sparks thoughts on how society can better address these issues, leaving a lasting impact on the reader.”
Smiling Face with Heart-Eyes“I really loved this memoir, Ryosukes story really resonated with me, and it’s comforting to know that many of us have had the same experiences growing up as gay adolescence and that the struggle is universal. This book also resonated with me because I lived in Japan in 2010 and being on a college campus I was able to plug into and LGBTQ+ group on campus and i saw how many people involved were still terrified to be identified as gay in public. I pray that Japan continues to change and I pray Ryosukes story continues to help and inspire”
