“Untamed Shore was fine. It's not Moreno-Garcia's best work (Gods of Jade and Shadow or Mexican Gothic) but is competent. She really likes to focus on specific images - for this text sharks and bezoars. It's fun and a decent read. The story beats are similar to her other works. I figured out how the romance was going to go because she does it that way almost every time.”

“Spoiler warning
Hmmm... the writing was still beautiful but this book was a miss for me. I didn’t like Viridiana. She was ridiculously naive and dumb. I know she is only 18, but I could not believe how easily Gregory drew her in. He obviously is only interested in her for sexual reasons and she deluded herself that she loved him, that he would take her to Paris. Come on. He is very direct in the nature of his interest. The sexual dynamics and messaging also made me very uncomfortable. Viridiana does technically consent to everything she does, but enjoys very little of it. There are an uncomfortable number of sex acts in this book. At least seven on page. Viridiana seems to learn that sex is transactional in this book. Gregory buys her a camera so she calculates its worth and agrees to preform a sex act on him as a kind of payment. This weird sexual education from the 29-year-old Gregory culminates in Viridiana calculating that it is worth losing her virginity to Lawrence in order to set up her alibi. She then becomes his mistress for the chance to move to Mexico City. Girl power! Remember your main value is in the sexual favors you can provide to men!
I also thought the “mystery” plot was kind of plodding and predictable. Almost as soon as Ambrose, Daisy and Gregory were introduced, I knew that Daisy and Gregory were not actually siblings, but lovers. And yes, they are con artist lovers working to rip off Ambrose, who dies under suspicious circumstances. And as Viridiana finds all of this out, she decides to continue to help them. Because she wants the excitement, I guess? I could not understand why she kept helping them. Gregory assures her that he is not still with Daisy; an obvious lie that Viridiana does not figure out until she literally overhears a conversation between them.
Viridiana’s stupidity makes the ending viciousness a bit hard to believe. She sells out Daisy and Gregory to thugs and gets them killed. She takes up with the clueless Lawrence and gets away with it. I think there was some metaphor in there about Viridiana being the real shark but I honestly would have preferred actual sharks to be involved in the ending. Lol. I also get a little tired of characters not wanting an ordinary life and seeking adventure in a crazy way. It’s fine to have an ordinary life. But I guess that would be a boring story.”
