“Winner of the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize Best First Book Award in 2010.
The story is set in 1930s Alberta, and follows a family who has left famine and tyranny in the Ukraine for a new start in Western Canada.
The story is seen through different family members, and you get a vivid sense of the landscape and their lives. There are always hardships, but also pockets of strength and human spirit in adversity. The perspective of each of the seven children of varying ages, adds to the depth of the story.
It’s a bittersweet tale, and a compelling read.”
“Incredible writing!! Definitely my favourite/the best book club book so far. wrenched my heart out.
Second read through October 2023- still packs a punch, not as raw as the first time of course but still so good I’m sending my mom a copy.”
