Umboi Island

By J.J. Dupuis
Umboi Island by J.J. Dupuis digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

The Creature X team travels to Papua New Guinea to investigate sightings of a surviving pterosaur.

Laura Reagan, host of Creature X, wants to leave North America behind and step out from the shadow of her father’s cryptozoological research. She leads her team to Umboi Island, off the coast of Papua New Guinea, to shoot a cryptozoological documentary about the mysterious Ropen, a bioluminescent pterosaur-like creature that has somehow survived extinction.

In a stroke of luck, Laura and her team see a mysterious purple light above the trees. Could it actually be what they’re searching for? But the hunt for the Ropen takes a drastic turn when a body turns up in the Creature X camp. With satellite phones down, Laura and her team are stuck on the island with a murderer — and no chance of help.

“"How long can we go on searching for cryptids and coming up empty?" "Finding Bigfoot was on the air for nine seasons, and still no Bigfoot." Was this quote the author's not-so-subtle jibe at his own novel? I'm here for the cryptids and adventures, and instead I got the opposite. This entire plot could have been done as a thriller about organized crime and drug trafficking without the veneer of cryptid-hunting. The introduction of the young earth creationist also felt superfluous as it didn't end up playing any part in developing the plot or conflict. There's a bigger story here and I'm intrigued by the cliffhanger, but overall, this was a disappointing read.”
“Relatable characters with real passion for an under appreciated interest. The MC was touching, the research well done, lived it”
“This was described to me as a cozy mystery and I'm so torn about that. On one hand, this was a fast read (perfect for Thanksgiving travels!) and had characters well rounded enough without needing to give pages upon pages of back story, Umboi Island definitely has some grisly moments you wouldn't expect in a cozy mystery. I definitely found enjoyment in losing myself in this world and foresee myself picking up other titles in the series, but I won't be running to the bookstore the next time a new one comes out. Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.”
