Tru & Nelle: A Novel

By G. Neri
Tru & Nelle: A Novel by G. Neri digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

Long before they became famous writers, Truman Capote ( ) and Harper Lee ( ) were childhood friends in Monroeville, Alabama. This fictionalized account of their time together opens at the beginning of the Great Depression, when Tru is seven and Nelle is six. They love playing pirates, but they like playing Sherlock and Watson-style detectives even more. It's their pursuit of a case of drugstore theft that lands the daring duo in real trouble. Humor and heartache intermingle in this lively look at two budding writers in the 1930s South.

Tru & Nelle: A Novel Reviews

3.5
“I enjoyed this book so much and I'm so glad I got to buy it in Monroeville, AL, the literary capital of Alabama and childhood home of Truman Capote and Harper Lee. The writing really draws you into the setting and the characters, and I loved picking the book up again and returning to that world. It was fun and interesting to read about Truman and Nelle's childhood friendship. The book also delves into the difficulties of the Depression and its effect on the town, as well as race issues and the KKK. I am looking forward to reading the second Tru & Nelle book. Update from G. Neri in response to my email: Good question! From my research: Soda fountain drinks, or drink Dopes—fountain coca cola plus cherry syrup, ice and carbonated water. Tru always treated putting it on Jenny’s tab. Setup: 10 cent drink, double Limeade or dope.”
“Reading Tru & Nelle was a very bittersweet experience. It follows two kids, Truman Capote and Nelle Harper Lee, who truly deserve all the love in the world, but somehow grow up surrounded by people who fail to give it, especially in Truman’s case. I would honestly slap both his parents if I could. They don’t deserve even a drop of his love. What makes this book special is the deep, beautiful bond between Tru and Nelle. They are platonic soulmates, two halves of a whole. Their friendship is odd, pure, and magical, and they bring out the best in each other. The story captures the joy of childhood in such a gentle, realistic way. Even though their lives aren't easy and there’s very little for them to be truly excited about, they somehow find ways to create joy, wonder, and imagination together. What broke my heart the most was the reminder that childhood friends don’t always get to stay by each other's side. People grow, and sometimes they grow apart. It’s painful, but true, and this book doesn’t shy away from that truth. But even though they may be apart, I know their friendship still lasts. It’s the kind of bond that doesn’t fade with time or distance. It lives on, quietly but fiercely. Tru & Nelle is tender, honest, and quietly powerful. It made me laugh, it made me ache, and it made me think about the kind of love that doesn’t always stay in the same form, but never truly disappears.”
“While this is a children’s book, I admire both Harper Lee and Truman Capote so much, I had to read it. I really enjoyed Neri’s accounts of their childhood experiences in this story - both lovers of words, books, and full of imagination. I appreciated the references to Capote’s “A Christmas Memory” with his cousins, especially Sook, and those of Lee’s “To Kill A Mockingbird” - father AC (Atticus). This is a refreshing, delightful and easy read.”
