“I’ve never read Walter Mosley before, and now I want to rush down to Powell’s and buy ALL his books.
This fine novella examines the interlinked questions of money, power, family, obligation and race in a disarmingly relaxed manner. Mosley’s characters come to life on the page, and they all shine with a real-life tenderness that make the book glow.
I only wish it were longer.
As it is, I’m off to the Library store to see what I can find. And, if I need to say it, this book is HIGHLY recommended!”
“A terrific outing. Mosley gives his hardboiled detective such a distinct voice that the book was a pleasure to read. When former crook turned PI Leonid McGill is hired by a Mississippi blues man to disclose the familial heritage of a racist demagogue as being of African descent, things start to get dangerous. Tense broody stare downs and tough guy reputation posturing exist side by side with tender hearted father/son moments and heartfelt honesty. This is great stuff. And the racist bad guys get their comeuppance. Gold.”
