Trieste And Meaning Of Nowhere
ByPublisher Description
.
This history-drenched city on the Adriatic has always tantalized Jan Morris with its moodiness and changeability. After visiting Trieste for more than half a century, she has come to see it as a touchstone for her interests and preoccupations: cities, seas, empires. It has even come to reflect her own life in its loves, disillusionments, and memories. Her meditation on Trieste is characteristically layered with history and glows with stories of famous visitors from James Joyce to Sigmund Freud.
A lyrical travelogue,
is also superb cultural history and the culmination of a singular career -- "an elegant and bittersweet farewell" (
).

“I thoroughly enjoy reading all things Jan Morris and was excited when I stumbled upon this having spent only a short period of time in Trieste. A worthwhile read delving into the different roles Trieste has played over the years whilst simultaneously seeing her own life suggested within the text having experienced the place in youth and in older age. There are certainly points where I diverge from her views which are rather aged, for example, she describes the British Empire "as a good empire then, and on the whole I still think so" and describes peoples in a less than desirable manner at times.”
