“this is formatted like an anthology, but it's actually a serial novel, so each story flows into the next. it essentially follows a group of people who are all somehow interconnected and tied back to diane, the duchess of tremontaine. there's the exiled foreign princess trying to preserve her name and her family's shipping monopoly; the university student trying to disprove the accepted basis of natural science who becomes entangled with the duke of tremontaine; the student's brilliant young protege, a farm girl turned scholar; the beautiful forger who becomes the lover of the princess; the swordsman who becomes the forger's protector; and of course, the duchess herself, who basically controls the whole city like a puppeteer but will do anything to prevent the secrets of her past from being revealed.
was this as good as the original riverside books? no. it was frankly too long, and spent too much time on trade politics and mathematics for my tastes. but it was engaging and twisty, with a gripping reveal near the end, and the duchess of tremontaine can step on me any day. probably not how I would recommend entering the world of riverside, but worth picking up if you're interested.”

“This book could’ve been interesting if the characters, dialogue and flow of story was better written/executed.
To be honest there were just a lot of weird stuff going on. Like, all the love stories was weirdly written, with no sparks/development whatsoever. A student falling for a duke who’s old to be his father, plus they had the hate/love relationship but in a very weird way.
Then Kaab’s instant love for Tess. Going through all lengths to meet her, protecr her and everything without proper build up.
I do love the unexpected, complicated friendship between Micah, Kaab and Rafe. How Kaab unexpextedle came to love them but at the same time has to lie to them to protect her family.
Then the final reveal about Diane’s true identity! I didn’t expect that but that was so good. I wouldn’t for the life of me understand why she didn’t just dispose of the locket. And how she didn’t get found out when the real Diane still has relatives somewhere.
What I also don’t understand is how the Duke came to know about the “fake Diane”. He said that the crow told him but who was the crow??? Is it an actual human or an actual crow. I’m confused because I feel like he was only made known of the fact when he was already losing his mind.”
