About Robert Louis Stevenson

Robert Louis Stevenson (1850- 1894) was a Scottish author, poet and travel writer who created some of the greatest literary works of the 19th century, including the adventure classics "Treasure Island," and "Kidnapped," the spine-tingling thriller "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" and a book of children's poetry, "A Child's Garden of Verses." Stevenson suffered from a number of severe health and respiratory conditions throughout his life, but he managed to travel the globe and collect ideas and details for his many books. After rejecting careers in both engineering and law, Stevenson chose instead to write about his great passion - travel - and eventually started branching out into fiction, first with short stories and then finally into novels, where he saw his first major success with "Treasure Island" in 1883. Encouraged by the success of his first novel, he soon penned two more literary classics and published them both in 1886: "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" ad "Kidnapped." Ever the adventurer, Stevenson settled with his wife Fanny on the island of Samoa where he would die, quite suddenly, of a cerebral hemorrhage in 1894 at the age of forty-four.
