“Loved how in depth this journalistic book was. It covered everything about the crime, went into family life, and of course the failures of our legal and forensic systems. She also touched on amazing activist groups that came out of this horrible murder to reclaim space for women and queer women belonging in nature. It inspired me to want to camp more but also bring more items for safety instead of just myself and “necessities”. Overall it was an easy read that was extremely informative and loved how personal and passionate the author was in their research and writing.”Sandy Greco

“This book is clearly well researched and comprehensive. However, it became a slog for me. As a huge true crime fan, I was surprised at how many times I zoned out. There was so much background and information about unimportant details, examples of unrelated cases, or information not directly related to the case that it definitely pulled me out of the case. That was disappointing.
If this had been more straightforward, it would have been about half as long.”

Kathryn Miles is the author of five books. Her essays and articles have appeared in publications including Audubon, Best American Essays, Best American Sports Writing, the Boston Globe, the New York Times, Outside, Politico, and Time. A contributing editor at Down East magazine, Miles also serves as a scholar-in-residence for the Maine Humanities Council and as a faculty member in several MFA programs.
