“A powerful and fiercely personal journey through a compelling postapocalyptic landscape.” —Kate Elliott, New York Times bestselling author of Court of Fives and Black Wolves

While most of the world has drowned beneath the sudden rising waters of a climate apocalypse, Dinétah (formerly the Navajo reservation) has been reborn. The gods and heroes of legend walk the land, but so do monsters—and it is up to one young woman to unravel the mysteries of the past before they destroy the future.

Maggie Hoskie is a Dinétah monster hunter, a supernaturally gifted killer. When a small town needs help finding a missing girl, Maggie is their last best hope. But what Maggie uncovers about the monster is much more terrifying than anything she could imagine.

Maggie reluctantly enlists the aid of Kai Arviso, an unconventional medicine man, and together they travel the rez, unraveling clues from ancient legends, trading favors with tricksters, and battling dark witchcraft in a patchwork world of deteriorating technology.

As Maggie discovers the truth behind the killings, she will have to confront her past if she wants to survive.

Trail of Lightning Reviews

3.5
Loudly Crying Face“I will say I did love the book but Im not sure how I feel about the way that it ended, there are a couple plot endings that I wish had gone on longer. I loved the relationships- I HATED Neizgháni but loved Kai, Maggie does have an essence of y/n main characterism to her but I did like her!”
“Local woman still not over abusive ex, more at 11. This one had so much potential. Post-Apocalyptic Urban Fantasy. Main character whose super power is Insatiable Bloodlust is a classic for a reason. The problem is, the middle half of the story is meandering and gives the Maggie little reason to spill blood. The romance felt off since she kept thinking about her ex-boyfriend, clearly still at least conflicted over him. Everyone kept tripping over themselves to point out how hot her love interest is and that she needs to get with him asap, felt gross every time. Many of the side characters that show up in the last half felt interchangeable. Maybe it was the lack of time we, the readers, got with them. Maybe it was them all being introduced at about the same time. The mystery seemed to go nowhere, Maggie has someone just give her the next clue multiple times, zero agency. And this takes up half of the story. The book had a satisfying ending and I am surprised to learn there is a sequel (I won't be reading if that has not been made clear). Additionally the audiobook had a capable narrator, no notes. Overall this book has the bones of a good story but it felt like the author didn't know how to make it all work together. No one element was done remarkably well except for the premise alone.”
