“The previous book to this one was an incredible culmination of many things that had been meticulously laid down in the preceding books. A mid-series climax I suppose. As a result, it was inevitable that this book was going to be a more low-profile one as it deals primarily with the initial after. The fallout of it all. Therefore, its slowness and lack of great action in many ways reflects the very first book of the series. It is clearly aimed at being the first step in that slow build up once again. So while its existence is necessary to the development of the series, as an individual book it remains one of the weaker ones so far.
Although I, once again, greatly appreciate how Novik continues to expand and explore upon all the ways different societies and cultures would incorporate dragons into their reality and how this vast richness of different ways of life is naturally contraposed to Empire and colonialism. Still greatly looking forward to where this series will take me next.”
