Together We Will Go

Together We Will Go by J. Michael Straczynski digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

The Breakfast Club meets The Silver Linings Playbook in this powerful, provocative, and heartfelt novel about twelve endearing strangers who come together to make the most of their final days, from New York Times bestselling and award-winning author J. Michael Straczynski.

Mark Antonelli, a failed young writer looking down the barrel at thirty, is planning a cross-country road trip. He buys a beat-up old tour bus. He hires a young army vet to drive it. He puts out an ad for others to join him along the way. But this will be a road trip like no other: His passengers are all fellow disheartened souls who have decided that this will be their final journey—upon arrival in San Francisco, they will find a cliff with an amazing view of the ocean at sunset, hit the gas, and drive out of this world.

The unlikely companions include a young woman with a chronic pain sensory disorder and another who was relentlessly bullied at school for her size; a bipolar, party-loving neo-hippie; a gentle coder with a literal hole in his heart and blue skin; and a poet dreaming of a better world beyond this one. We get to know them through access to their texts, emails, voicemails, and the daily journal entries they write as the price of admission for this trip.

By turns tragic, funny, quirky, charming, and deeply moving, Together We Will Go explores the decisions that brings these characters together, and the relationships that grow between them, with some discovering love and affection for the first time. But as they cross state lines and complications to the initial plan arise, it becomes clear that this is a novel as much about the will to live as the choice to end it. The final, unforgettable moments as they hurtle toward the decisions awaiting them will be remembered for a lifetime.

“Epistolary Lit Fic. Entirely told through through text messages, emails, voice messages and daily journal entries. Warning: this story is about suicidal ideation, includes descriptions of past suicide attempts, and results in multiple completed suicides. Mark is an unsuccessful writer. He buys an old tour bus, hires a driver, and puts out an ad online for other individuals who'd like to join a cross-country trip with the purpose of driving off a cliff together once they reach San Francisco. Mark and the driver pick up ten people along the way. They are each different and distinct people, at different points in their life, with different reasons behind choosing to end their life. This was such a great journey. It's obviously sad in many ways, but there were so many real and raw emotions, heartwarming connections made between the characters, and a few plot turns. I cried quite a bit. I think this story does a good job of delving into the reasons why people may choose to end their lives, discusses how to educate people against suicide through exposure, the legal and moral issues of suicide and assisted suicide, and small ways to fight suicidal ideations. I highly suggest choosing the audiobook, as all 12 characters are narrated by different people. Since this is entirely epistolary, I think it adds to the story to hear each characters voice in their writing and recordings. This book was excellent and beautifully written, but it is absolutely not for everyone. Your mental health matters, and is of primary importance, take care reading this book.”
“This is such an interesting plot for a book! It was well written but even better to listen to. The audiobook has a cast of characters which make them so much more real. For texts and voice recordings, the audiobook did a great job. The book did a lot of things well: challenged the social norms of suicide, showed what community can do for someone, encapsulated what it means to live with chronic pain and illness, touched on the implications of fatness in a world where skinny is the only standard, told the story of the love between humans and their pets, and touched on the legal and ethical skepticism of suicide. The author explored these themes all with unique voices and perspectives which I REALLY appreciate. The thing I didn’t like about this book was how slow it started up for me. I don’t know if it was just a reading slump but I picked this up, read a quarter then didn’t pick it back up for 3 weeks and consumed the rest via audio book. The cast of characters were hard for me to keep straight at some points, likely because of my pause in reading it. Kind of saw the twist coming but loved being able to hear the characters thoughts and inner most secrets through it all.”
