“I spent many of my youthful Saturdays rummaging through secondhand book stores, and this novel was a permanent fixture in all of them. Does that mean it’s a really good novel that everyone purchased before donating to the shops … or does it mean it’s a crappy novel that no one ever bothered to read? Inevitably, I ended up buying it, probably for ten English pence or thereabouts. And … I never read it. But I always liked the cover (not the one shown here, the one byBruce Pennington for New English Library). So now, all these years later, I have read it and … yawn. An unlikable protagonist, occasionally confusing sentences, and a sense of pointlessness made this a struggle, though a mercifully short one.”
