Those Who Went Before

Those Who Went Before by Elizabeth Spencer digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

The Lady in White and the Hunter of Night is Helvensgate's most beloved children's tale. It tells of two lovers, blessed by magic, whose quest ended with them sleeping for centuries, hand in hand, until they can be together once more.

All of it is wrong.

A thousand years ago, Adecca was sent away to serve the spirits of the dead; Mikael was exiled after being cursed by the Wood. They were each other's best and only friends—or so Adecca thought—until, with one unexpected kiss, Mikael enchanted them both with eternal sleep.

Now Adecca has awakened, and the world is nothing like she remembers. The empire's machines move of their own volition, a man-eating forest is growing into the city, and conflicts between the empress and the engineering guilds are spiraling out of control.

Still, Adecca could have everything she ever wanted—a home among people, actual friends!—and all she must do is ignore the supernatural mysteries writhing beneath Helvensgate and pretend she is madly in love with Mikael.

Clearly something must be sacrificed for this world to be at peace. But does it always have to be her?

“This was such an amazing read! I had a great time with it. It's almost as if this book was written for me. The plot was really fun. I really like fantasy books that deal with technological advancements. That element of the story is connected to a take on ecological issues. Even though it's not really about the environment, but it's a completely different problem, the parallels are clear and the focus is mostly on how people (both regular people and people in power) react to the news that what they've been doing is causing harm. I thought that was done very well. Theater plays play a big role in that. They're clearly the in-word parallel for tv and provide an exploration about propaganda. When the people in power have control over the popular medium, they can get the masses to believe whatever they want. We see what how this can cause mob mentality and what happens if you happen to fall on the wrong side of that dynamic. The characters are very well-developed. I love a good found family in my stories and that is definitely present in this book. Based on how the book ends, i'm scared for that element and i hope they will all be allright in the next book. I also loved the way Adecca is being confronted with a story about her, that she doesn't recognise at all, which puts her in a very complicated position. This is also where the feminism comes in. That theme is executed very well. I especially appreciated the nuance in regards to this. Even in a society that is ruled by an empress, where a woman can be head engeneer, in the story the Lady in White only exists in relation to a man. And in every turn, people are surprised that Adecca wants to do stuff instead of just sitting there and being pretty, even if that's not a strict norm for women in this world. I think that this nuanced take is just a lot more interesting than the more simplistic version we see a lot in historical(ly inspired) stories. Overall, i think this is an excellent novel and i enjoyed it a great deal. The ending makes me really excited to read the sequel, so i can't wait untill we get that! I would highly recommend this book if it sounds interesting. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout, but i try not to let that impact my experience and review the book as honestly as i can.”
