Publisher Description

Perfect for fans of Holly Jackson and Lucy Foley, don't miss this thrilling mystery with a big twist by the New York Times bestselling author of First Lie Wins, Ashley Elston!

Five boys went hunting. Four came back. And the evidence shows any one of them could be guilty.

Kate Marino's senior year internship at the District Attorney's Office isn't exactly glamorous—more like an excuse to leave school early that looks good on college applications. Then the DA hands her boss, Mr. Stone, the biggest case her small town of Belle Terre has ever seen. The River Point Boys are all anyone can talk about. Despite their damning toxicology reports the morning of the accident, the DA wants the boys' case swept under the rug. He owes his political office to their powerful families.

Kate won't let that happen. Digging up secrets without revealing her own is a dangerous line to walk; Kate has personal reasons for seeking justice. As she gets dangerously close to the truth, it becomes clear that the early morning accident might not have been an accident at all-and if she doesn't uncover the true killer, more than one life could be on the line including her own.

Slightly Smiling Face“This YA mystery by Ashley Elston was quite enjoyable, definitely for the younf teen. I found the storyline intriguing and complex enough to keep me invested, especially with the dual-POV narration. Hearing from the killer without knowing who he was amped up the suspense level and added to Kate’s perspective, readers get a rounded view of what the boys’ lives and friendships were like before the incident. I listened to the audiobook and found this story to be engaging on audio. Both narrators have a Southern twang that showcases the book’s setting and makes the story feel more real. Besides the mystery and thrill of Kate’s life being at risk, this book also explores several important themes like class (unlike Kate, the accused boys are from influential families who can protect them from disciplinary action), feminism, the broken justice system, and the “boys will be boys” mentality. Overall an enjoyable book for the young adult. I would recommend this book if you are looking for spice. Hence, the YA label; if you like mystery in a high-school setting you'll like this book.”
“4.25/5⭐️ “ A tan point buck and a body make the same sound when they hit the forrest floor” “I suck at stalking more than spying.” “The girl with the camera is going to be a problem.” “I don’t know how she can be so optimistic about the legal system after all these years.” What a fun little book. I know that sounds literally insane to say about a murder case, but I enjoyed every moment of this. I’ve seen a ton of reviews blasting Kate’s mom not understanding how she didn’t know about anything that was happening with her involvement in this case but all I have to say to that, is clearly yall have never lived in a small town… these kids run rampant lmao. I honestly love these characters so much. For being such a quick read, they have so much depth and personality. Everyone’s reactions to the things happening were very much realistic and I actually ventured away from most thrillers/mysteries for a while because I couldn’t imagine the characters acting that way. However Kate, the Riverpoint boys, and every other character, just acts like a small town group of highschoolers. The mystery aspect of these book was surprisingly good. I was quite worried it would read way too YA for my taste, but I genuinely got the chills a few times. ESPECIALLY when my audiobook would switch to the killers POV. Damn. By about 80% in I had it narrowed down pretty well for who did it, but the way everything played out felt really well paced, and I was super enthralled.”
