Publisher Description

A New York Times Bestseller

The riveting story of a heroic girl who fights for her belief that water should be for everyone.

Minni lives in the poorest part of Mumbai, where access to water is limited to a few hours a day and the communal taps have long lines. Lately, though, even that access is threatened by severe water shortages and thieves who are stealing this precious commodity—an act that Minni accidentally witnesses one night. Meanwhile, in the high-rise building where she just started to work, she discovers that water streams out of every faucet and there’s even a rooftop swimming pool. What Minni also discovers there is one of the water mafia bosses. Now she must decide whether to expose him and risk her job and maybe her life. How did something as simple as access to water get so complicated?

Thumbs Up“As a 21-year-old English teacher, I would recommend this book to everyone. It’s very comprehensible for people with A2-B1 proficiency level. It’s also super short! If you’re not fluent in English and looking for a book that could get you into reading. THIS IS A PERFECT BOOK FOR YOU! Heartwarming, tear-jerking (in the saddest way possible), and packed with a theme of social justice. I want to see more of character development though. I saw Minni mentioned in the book a lot that she grows and different from her younger self. But I want to see a little bit of a flashback, how she was like when she was younger or how her character changed. I mean in an actual flashback, not just a character saying that they’ve changed.”
“I read this because my 4th grader’s school used it as an all-school read. I wanted to preview it to bring to my own intermediate school. Found the plot to be fairly shallow, and the character development shallow. I think this is partly due to the corrupt nature of the water crisis in India, and the fact that in a book for grades 4-6 the real details of what might happen with a “water mafia” are far too intense for young kids.”
