Thinking About It Only Makes It Worse: And Other Lessons from Modern Life Reviews

3.0
“Thinking About It Only Makes It Worse and Other Lessons from Modern Life is a tongue‑in‑cheek snapshot of a pre‑COVID Britain, exactly what you’d expect from David Mitchell. As it was a charity shop pick up I'm reading it more than a decade after its original release, and as the first of his books I’ve picked up, it’s made me want to dive into the rest of his work. The book is a selection of his Observer newspaper columns from roughly 2008 to 2014, which means he’s commenting on UK politics, media culture, social habits, early‑smartphone technology, and the general absurdities of British life that happened to take place during my late‑teens to early‑twenties, so the references land with a surprising amount of nostalgia. The good old days of Horse meat lasagna, Jimmy Savile being exposed, the credit crunch, big brands changing there names/logos, x-factor, Disney buying the rights to Star Wars, the death of ceefax... Well they were okay at best and not too long ago days.”
