Thief of Night

By Holly Black
Thief of Night by Holly Black digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

The highly-anticipated sequel to the #1 New York Times bestselling author Holly Black's stunning adult debut, Book of Night.

Night is made of shadows and shadows have teeth.

Charlie Hall, glue trap for disaster, crooked from the day she was born, who’d never met a bad decision she wasn’t willing to double down on, may have finally met her match.

After defeating Salt and stealing her lover—the powerful shadow, Vince—back from under the noses of the powerful Cabal leaders, she thought she’d won. Agreeing to become the Hierophant and risking her life hunting down dangerous rogue shadows seemed a small price to pay if she got to do it while being tethered to Vince.

But Vince is no longer the man she loved. The tethering process wiped away his memories of the last year, leaving only Red—the ruthless shadow who spent years as a killer for a cruel, mercurial billionaire. Red doesn’t remember Charlie and doesn’t like her.

So when Charlie is ordered to track down the Blight responsible for a massacre at a local church, she’s worse than just alone, heartbroken, and outmatched. She’s vulnerable. In a world where shadows have wills of their own, the question isn’t just how to survive. It’s how to protect yourself from the on thing you can never escape—your own shadow.

At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Thief of Night Reviews

“Charlie Hall, my favourite (anti)heroine. Thief of Night is the sequel to Book of Night; the two books form a duology. To quickly recap Book 1: Charlie is a bartender and a con artist in her spare time. She's dating Vince, who cleans up crime scenes. Their lives take a complicated turn when Charlie is tasked with stealing a mysterious book on shadow magic, drawing her into the intricate web of a secret society. Holly Black ranks among my favourite authors, and urban fantasy holds a special place as one of my preferred subgenres. Every time, I fall under the spell of her characters. They are very often morally grey and on the fringes of society. And Charlie Hall is no exception. I’ve previously likened her to Fiona, the protagonist of the US series Shameless, as they are pretty similar. She doesn't care about social conventions, exhibits fearlessness, and can often be quite vulgar. She has a difficult family history, and an unapologetic nature. Her life, far from idyllic and marked by periods of depression, makes her precisely the kind of complex character I love to discover. Moreover, the male protagonist didn't leave me indifferent either… I'm thoroughly satisfied with this sequel and its conclusion. The investigative aspect returns, and the unfolding events genuinely surprised me. While the romance remains subtle, it undeniably forms the core of the story. Holly Black’s talent for crafting love stories is unmatched. They're fraught with obstacles, full of tension, sometimes crude, and I take great delight in them. In short, it's an adult fantasy duology that I particularly appreciate.
