“Emile Zola brings to the reader a horrific realism of the century. The notion of supernatural or supra-human justice has been very well executed. The vividness and squalor of the lower French classes of the times have been very graphically and skillfully rendered both on physical and mental levels. This books is a very powerful read in my opinion. The kind of intensity that Zola achieves can be compared to Dostoevsky.”
