Publisher Description

New York Times bestselling author Gena Showalter returns with a new book in the tantalizing Rise of the Warlords series, featuring a brutal Hell king and the irresistible beauty who upends his world.

For centuries, Rathbone the Only, King of Agonies, has existed for one purpose: recovering the enchanted bones of his slain wife to bring her back to life. He’s never been closer to success. But a new enemy has risen. A band of deadly war gods who have thirty days to destroy her or suffer the consequences. With time running out, Rathbone hires a maddening harpy-oracle, unaware she has an agenda of her own.

Neeka the Unwanted is a fierce warrior on a mission: stop Rathbone and the gods. She’s seen the future if either is victorious, and it’s horrifying. She’ll do whatever proves necessary to forge a new path, even seduce the ruthless royal from his purpose. What she can’t predict? How the intense male will shatter her hard-won defenses along the way.

As Rathbone battles unexpected betrayals, cunning foes and the wild temptress he craves with every fiber of his being, he knows he must choose: hold on to a cold dream or embrace a new flame.

“I have the privilege to read this prior to release. Although it’s a standalone, I feel like it would be beneficial to read the previous 3 books to truly understand the history and troubles, these characters have had to deal with. You’ll be introduced to Rathbone who has spent centuries with a sole purpose of restoring his wife by recovering her enchanted bones. He cares for nothing else but his wife. With other players trying to stop him, he reaches out to an oracle for help. Unable to let go of the past, his anger, and temper. He ends up hurting people along his path to restore what he wants without understanding what’s in front of him. Here we are introduced to Neeka, she is a harpy and a bit crazy but in a fun way! Labeled as the Unwanted for her entire existence, it’s taken a toll on her and her desire to prove everyone wrong. She becomes a baddie and finds herself. The development of her character is incredible! Together these two flow into an awkward relationship, but there banter is completely organic. While they learn how to work together, they must also uncover secrets and dodge gods with a mission of their own.”
“Loved the book as a whole, honestly devoured it. However, the ending was awful. Just felt like really lazy writing. The "twist" for how Azar actually succeeds just comes out of nowhere, there are no clues or lead up to it.”
