Publisher Description

You read her letters in Cursed Soldier; now find out what happened to Kathryn between Benjamin's letters and the war.

In April of 1861, Kathryn's life was forever changed. She stood by and watched as Benjamin, the man she loved, left for war. She was his constant anchor by providing him her support and love through letters. Their relationship stood through the first years of the war as she prayed for his safe return home. One battlefield in Pennsylvania would bring about a change in Benjamin to someone she didn't know, someone who would break her heart.

Thaddeus Morgan is the President of the local bank and one of the few men who did not march into battle. He thought it best to stay with his mother after the unexpected passing of his father. When an illness strikes, he offers Kathryn a position at his bank while she waits for Benjamin to return. He is the perfect gentleman, making sure she is alright after her world comes crashing down.

How will Kathryn pick up the pieces of her life once the war is over? Will she forever be broken hearted? Will she move on? Or will she fade away like the life she used to have before the war?

“You have to stay positive until there isn't a reason to. **Cursed Soldier spoilers below!!** Kathryn Alexander thought she had everything. The man she loved had just proposed to her, and wedding preparations were underway. Then that fateful day in 1861 happened, a date that would change Kathryn's world forever. She learned that war was breaking out between the states, and, to her horror, Benjamin, the man she loves with all of her heart, has decided to go fight. He asks her to marry him before he leaves, but she turns him down. She is adamant about waiting so that, if something were to happen to him, she would not become a widow. She can't help but worry over Benjamin. His letters reassure her that he is ok, but each letter takes months to reach her. She listens with bated breath as the lists of dead and wounded are read, praying that Benjamin's name is never read. Miraculously, her prayers are answered. One day, however, she receives a letter that will change her. After the Battle of Gettysburg, she can sense a change in Benjamin's tone. Thankfully, Thaddeus Morgan, the local banker, is there to offer her support during this trying time. He offers Kathryn a position at his bank to keep her occupied during the war and to help her feel like she is supporting the cause. Soon, Kathryn's world comes crashing down, and she isn't sure if she will survive it, or even if she will stay brokenhearted forever. She is faced with tough decisions as the Civil War concludes, ones that will either change her life for better or worse. I thoroughly enjoyed McKellips's Cursed Soldier, and I was excited to dive back into the world and see Kathryn's point of view. This book is not so much a sequel as it is a prequel or parallel to Cursed Soldier. I loved being able to read Kathryn's point of view and learn more about what was happening during this time in their lives. One voice can make a difference, but it can also be lost in a sea of voices”

About Laura Lee McKellips

Self-proclaimed history bluff, Laura Lee McKellips writes romance novels laced with history as well as modern-day trials. She likes to write smart and funny heroines and equally strong and funny heroes.

She is a mixture of all her characters including the males: funny, smart, sassy, outgoing, loving, and guarded. She lets her characters tell their story in their own way much to her dismay at times.

After reading a self-published book in 2013, Laura Lee decided to type out one of the stories floating around in her head. Since then she has written Cursed Soldier, The Woman Behind the Letters, Sorority Sisters Duet (Courtney and Lily), Savannah, Slay the Demon, Falling for Cody, Life in the Moments, Diamond Dirt, and Siren Song. She is currently working on another historic novel based in her hometown.
