Publisher Description

A New York Times Notable Book of 2021

“The kind of book for which the word “rollicking” was invented.”—New York Times Book Review

A prim and proper lady thief must save her aunt from a crazed pirate and his dangerously charming henchman in this fantastical historical romance.

Cecilia Bassingwaite is the ideal Victorian lady. She's also a thief. Like the other members of the Wisteria Society crime sorority, she flies around England drinking tea, blackmailing friends, and acquiring treasure by interesting means. Sure, she has a dark and traumatic past and an overbearing aunt, but all things considered, it's a pleasant existence. Until the men show up.

Ned Lightbourne is a sometimes assassin who is smitten with Cecilia from the moment they meet. Unfortunately, that happens to be while he's under direct orders to kill her. His employer, Captain Morvath, who possesses a gothic abbey bristling with cannons and an unbridled hate for the world, intends to rid England of all its presumptuous women, starting with the Wisteria Society. Ned has plans of his own. But both men have made one grave mistake. Never underestimate a woman.

When Morvath imperils the Wisteria Society, Cecilia is forced to team up with her handsome would-be assassin to save the women who raised her--hopefully proving, once and for all, that she's as much of a scoundrel as the rest of them.

Rolling on the Floor Laughing Face“A unique world set in the Victorian era about a group of high society women who plot over teatime. They’re dignified but they’re quick to pull out their pistols. They’ll have a knife to your throat while requesting you address them with formal manners. These scenes weren’t intense in anyway though, there was always a current of unseriousness in the air. This was truly a comedic assassin book. Go into this story knowing there will be alot of nonsense, in a good way. They can steal homes and fly them away, those who do are called pirates. Their interactions with each other are comical and not always realistic. The conflicts get resolved in silly ways. It was a light hearted and fun read. This felt like a mix between Mary Poppins and Mr & Mrs Smith.”
“3.9. my god what a silly and fun time. i too would have my drawers charmed off by a pirate as nice and stupid and lovely as ned. i would also let cecilia have her way with me. silly and unserious and funny and cozy. exactly what i needed. there were times where it felt like the book tried a bit too hard, but in the grand scheme of things, it did not really matter. alex o’reilly, i have my eye on you.”
