“The Windup Girl was a harsh but amazing read! My favorite part of this book was the incredibly detailed dystopian city of Bangkok that is painted throughout the novel. I don’t read many books set in SE Asia, the sheer amount of research . I often found myself looking up particular words or cultural/religious symbols, which I loved learning about. Being a climate changed future, it is also intensely scary to think about a world like this being reality. This is truly RCP-8.5 laid out in front of our eyes.
I also loved the characters in the book, especially how morally ambiguous they were. I got to read all the different perspectives of the same issue. The one character I would have liked to see more from his perspective was Akkarat, kind of the only “villain” I could really pick out.
Overall though, the plot could have been a bit more conclusive. I really liked when it picked up near the end, but was left a little bit empty in the concluding pages. Perhaps that was the point though.
I Recommend it, especially if you are into dystopian climate futures, where humanity does everything wrong (or too little too late).”
