“Thank you to Berkley Pub and Ace Books for the gifted finished paperback copy.
I really wish I had enjoyed this one a bit more than I did. Ace Books sent me this copy a few months ago and I was waiting for my Libby hold to come in to do an immersive read of it. And I'm glad I did that, because if I hadn't had the audio to go with this I think this would have been a DNF around 40% in. I would give this a 2.5 star, I think it's definitely a middle of the road read.
Things I did enjoy: the elemental magic, the main character's care for other people, and the MMC. I am a sucker for elemental magic in books, so that was absolutely a selling point for me. The FMC is very caring and kind, and the MMC was dark and broody which I always love.
I really struggled with how slow this book is. It's over 500 pages, I really think it would have benefited from shaving off about 100 of those. The beginning is so incredibly drawn out, the first 30% of the book it felt like they were just traveling from one place to another. There was some action thrown in, which helped, but it didn't really do anything for the plot. At about 60% I actually wrote in my reading journal, "where is the plot". I think this needed to be shorter or had a lot more going on in the first half to justify the length and push the story forward. This is a trilogy, and I actually have the second book already, and I think it's about the same length. I will read it because I already own it, but I will absolutely be waiting for my Libby hold for the audio before starting it.
The romance between the main characters didn't feel organic to me either. You know immediately who the love interest will be but they didn't have any chemistry. And then at one point she thinks he's going to swoop in and kiss her? It didn't feel plotted well for the romance for me. I didn't feel a connection for them at all beyond their elemental magic.
The more I type this review the more I'm asking myself whether I enjoyed it enough to put time into another over 500 page book to continue the story. And I'm not sure if I am. I may come back and edit the rating/review later, but right now I'm putting this at a mid range book that I'm not sure is worth the investment of time.
