“I really wanted to love this story because there were parts of it that I genuinely enjoyed.
The writing was beautiful, and you can tell the sea is almost a character all on its own. Unfortunately, the pacing was just too slow for me, and I found myself struggling to stay connected to the story.
I actually ended up more interested in some of the side characters than the main ones. By the end, I still wasn't sure I really knew the FMC, and I wanted a little more from her journey.
This one just wasn't the right book for me, but I know there are readers who love slower, atmospheric fantasy, and I think they may enjoy it much more than I did.”
“The Wild Beneath is a beautiful and strange novel that I can't quite place into a genre. It has parts of different genres like magical realism, climate fiction, romance, fantasy, coming-of-age, mystery all together. The story follows a girl who grows up on a sailboat and loses her family in a tsunami at 19. From there, we watch her grow up while trying to uncover the mysteries surrounding her life and the mysterious stranger. I just wanted to know everything about Annie. The ending does leave the reader with some questions, but I liked that. It gave me space to imagine what happened next. One quote I absolutely loved was: "Her grief is a jellyfish with tentacled stingers, taking over her body, ready to reach out and lash her anytime she thinks of her parents." Beautiful prose like this is written throughout the novel. Thanks to Booktrovert for the digital ARC that I won”
“This was such an unusual book. It is a love story but also a love story to the sea. It was beautifully written throughout and had some deeply descriptive traits described - depression , love, obsession, loyalty, etc. I'm still not quite sure what to think about this story.
