Surprised Face with Open Mouth“This book is a scary delight, rather like sitting around a bonfire at summer camp with friends and telling the most terrifying stories you can come up with. Each of the stories in this book, though written by a different author, have one thing in common- as might be gathered from the title, a white man is always the first to And if you think that makes the stories repetitive or predictable, you would be wrong. Each one takes that basic idea and turns it into a unique story, each unnerving and cathartic in its own way, whether it includes ghosts, demons, witches, cannibals, or simply girls who have had enough. One thing I appreciated was that the short stories in this book is that they are just that- short and pithy. There isn't any fluff in sight, and once a story starts it doesn't stop, barreling through blood and gore and scares all the way to the conclusion without so much as a breath. And yet, the stories are well written and the various authors do a good job of setting the stage for each story and making the reader invested in the main characters and want them to survive in just a page or two. The diversity in these stories is also delightful- main characters of multiple nationalities are featured, as well as plenty of queer representation. Two of the stories, in fact, center almost entirely around queerness- that of a Black lesbian who escapes her boyfriend in a circus themed story that has strong Chappell Roan vibes, and that of a nonbinary Iranian who is turned into a monster by a genderqueer spirit and takes revenge on their racist archeology mentor. Both stories, unsurprisingly, are close to my favorites in the book. The award for my favorite probably goes from a story about a girl methodically eliminating a group of her classmates who had mocked her mother for years. In short, this is a delightful read for any time you need both scares and a creepy aesthetic and catharsis.”
