When Alleyne and his brother finally get together for the first time since Alleyne was a baby, Alleyne learns that his brother is still upset because their father donated the monastery three hides of land to maintain the child. The three friends encounter Sir Nigel and his formidable wife Mary when Alleyne joins up with Aylward, Hordle John. Alleyne is hired as Sir Nigel's squire and Maude's teacher after finding out that Maude is his daughter. The young pair confesses their love to one another shortly before the men leave for France.
