“Of the three books in the series, this was by far my favourite. The main character was interesting and his story-line kept me reading. Because the book had a few storylines, I was always dissapointed when it would transition over to a sub-plot, and away from Faolan's story. Its been a while since I stayed up until 2am reading, and not finish the book - this is one of those books. Juliet Marillier is a great author who puts so much into her stories and characters that it is always sad when they are over.”

“If you make it to the third and final book of the Birdei Chronicles it’s worth the read. From a slow and careful buildup of the previous two books, Marillier diverts our attention away from our main protagonists Birdei and Tuala and focuses on the complex and enduring Faolin (the meticulous and stoic assassin) otherwise known as Birdei’s trusted confidant and right hand man.
Naturally, always being a fan of the underdog I was delighted to explore more of his character alongside the interwoven and complementary side stories of Anna and Ellie. From only getting glimpses into Faolin’s past and the demons that haunt him in the previous books, it was incredibly satisfying to delve into the shadows of this character and offered the reader a chance to finally understand the how, what and most importantly why Faolin is the way he is.
Throughout the book, Marillier sprinkles in themes of triumph over adversity, love triangles, enemies to lovers, duty vs. destiny and the preservation of one’s true will. I was sad to leave our characters at the books conclusion after being utterly encapsulated by their storyline’s but couldn’t have picked a better way for Marillier to seamlessly tie off the multitude of threads woven throughout this trilogy. Definitely keen to explore more of Marillier’s work and can see myself reading this again in the future!”
