NATIONAL BESTSELLER • “Flavia is incisive, cutting and hilarious . . . one of the most remarkable creations in recent literature.” —USA Today
Flavia de Luce, a dangerously smart eleven-year-old with a passion for chemistry and a genius for solving murders, thinks that her days of crime-solving in the bucolic English hamlet of Bishop’s Lacey are over—until beloved puppeteer Rupert Porson has his own strings sizzled in an unfortunate rendezvous with electricity. But who’d do such a thing, and why? Does the madwoman who lives in Gibbet Wood know more than she’s letting on? What about Porson’s charming but erratic assistant? All clues point toward a suspicious death years earlier and a case the local constables can’t solve—without Flavia’s help. But in getting so close to who’s secretly pulling the strings of this dance of death, has our precocious heroine finally gotten in way over her head?
BONUS: This edition includes an excerpt from Alan Bradley's A Red Herring Without Mustard, discussion questions, and an essay by the author.

“My second Flavia de Luce (the 2nd in the series) and I loved it so much more than the first! Perhaps it was knowing better what to anticipate in that Flavia is a devilishly clever and cleverly devilish absolute imp of a narrator and protagonist. I caught myself actually laughing audibly on several occasions from her interior thoughts, which is not often something I find in a mystery, cozy or otherwise. I'm delighted there are several more adventures to embark on with Miss de Luce, since I'm already eager to find out where she and her faithful bike, Gladys, will barrell us off to next.”

“The Weed That Strings the Hangman's Bag
The Weed That Strings the Hangman's Bag by Alan Bradley is the second book in the captivating Flavia de Luce series, and it builds upon the foundation laid by its predecessor, The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie. This enchanting mystery follows the adventures of the precocious Flavia, a young girl with an insatiable curiosity and a penchant for chemistry, as she navigates the complexities of village life and delves into a perplexing death.
When the beloved puppeteer, Rupert Porson, is found dead in a most unusual manner, Flavia, with her keen observation skills and her insatiable thirst for knowledge, becomes inexplicably drawn to the investigation. As she delves deeper into the mystery, she encounters a cast of intriguing characters, each with their own secrets and motives. Flavia, with her unique blend of innocence and intelligence, uncovers a web of hidden agendas and long-buried secrets that threaten to unravel the peaceful facade of her idyllic village.
Bradley masterfully weaves together a captivating mystery with the warmth and charm of village life. Flavia's unique voice and perspective make this a truly engaging read. The Weed That Strings the Hangman's Bag is a delightful blend of mystery, humor, and coming-of-age storytelling that will captivate readers of all ages.
