The Wastewater Gardener
ByPublisher Description
Mark Nelson, PhD, has worked for several decades in closed ecological systems research. As one of eight brave souls enclosed in the pioneering Biosphere 2 experiment for two years in 1991-1993, Nelson learned fi rst hand how essential the proper use of human waste is to the health of the planet. This realization, combined with his lifelong love aff air with constructed wetlands, led to the development of Wastewater Gardens, an ecological way to treat human waste and preserve water quality.

“Not my typical read but very insightful! For those who complain about having "shitty" jobs - this will put your rants in perspective! Mark Nelson has quite literally devoted his life work to shit and human waste and at all corners of this earth! This book will have you wondering "where does my shit end up?", and why don't we all have wastewater gardens in our backyards? We know farmers use animal manure to fertilize crops - why is human manure so taboo? OK, even I still find a certain stigma attached to that, but I think we could overcome it when you see the beauty that can result via wastewater garden treatment.
I also became fascinated with the Biosphere 2 project in Tucson, Arizona where Nelson and others spent 2 years in this closed ecological system! What a great learning experience that would be for us all to partake and impart our observations with others! Apparently you can go visit and tour the centre - but it would be even cooler if you could spend a full 48 hrs. minimum to grasp the full marvel of what we take for granted and are at risking of losing! Nonetheless, I will be proposing a family trip to Arizona to see it at some point!
