“The couple: Valerio and Daniela
Romance genre: brother's best friend
Series: The Avelar Family Scandals
Length: 224 pages
Plot: Daniela's twin brother is about to be declared legally dead after a horrible incident in Rio where he and his business partner/best friend were abducted and tortured. The friend, Valerio, isn't doing well. He's suffering from PTSD and he has secrets about the incident as well. Dani is trying to get him to tell her what really happened, and barring that, she needs him to come back to his business, the one she's been running while he recovers. Valerio knows things that Dani doesn't, though, and in order to keep her safe, he says they must marry. This is both heaven and hell for Dani because it's everything she always wanted, but only a facsimile. Except that Valerio has secrets about more than just the incident that destroyed him...
Commentary: Oh these two! Just admit it already. They had everyone believing they didn't like each other when it was so obvious that they did! I liked that Dani wasn't a typical stick-thin waif of a pixie (which, honestly, I usually adore a size-difference trope), but neither was there any harping on the "curvy girl" idea. I never did understand why Valerio didn't just tell Daniela everything - by all accounts, his included, she was smart, driven, competent; surely she would have understood. But the secrets drove the plot. And there was that little plot twist at the end (with no mention of it in the admittedly very cute epilogue).
