The Usual Suspects Reviews

3.5
“The Usual Suspects is a middle grade novel (not quite YA) that highlights disparities in education and experience between students seen as ‘Special Education’ or with disabilities and students with a general education. In this school setting, students with disabilities are separated into their own class and it creates a barrier with how they are treated and viewed. Thelonius is in this class and often feels frustrated, like he is forced to act out when he’s already put into this box. And I appreciate the authors reflection on this, as often kids that are labeled, ‘bad kids’ take on that persona because they’ve had that worldview and image engrained in them - often believing they cannot surpass that. I discovered Broaddus from the horror anthology, Out There Screaming, and I really look forward to reading more adult work from him.”
“As a special education teacher, I was interested in this book. There were parts that were tough to read as the reality is that students who receive special education support are still seen as less than and troublemakers. This book was a good read and with many complex characters.”
