“3.5 stars. The good: Peter, Lord Flint, is an awesome and very sympathetic character. A man of heart trying to be be stoic and perfect. But he is only 27. Perhaps allowances must be made. The smuggling network that and the Elites are up against is truly formidable. Jess is enjoyably resourceful and determined to survive. She also struggles realistically to find a way to work with the English without ensuring she is hung as a traitor. I really enjoyed following Peter’s strategy as he tries to smuggle Jess to London when the actual smuggling ring is desperately searching for her. Peter’s family of pesky but loving women is a lot of fun.
Parts I wasn’t so fond of include Peter’s apparent inability to keep his hands to himself. While the steam is pleasant, it seemed very unrealistic to have Peter be so weak. Also, why wasn’t he removed from his assignment when he was clearly compromised, especially with his past history? He seems out of control and no one challenges him.
The final battle is ingenious. My eyes started to roll when Jess decided to risk her own life because it wasn’t clear to me that she was helping. The actions of the villain also didn’t make sense. Too bad as the plot and characters are great.”
