The Turn of the Screw

By Henry James
The Turn of the Screw by Henry James digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

One of the most famous ghost stories in literature, The Turn of the Screw earned its place in the annals of influential English novellas not for its qualities as a gothic ghost story, but rather for the many complex and subtle ways the reader can come to opposing conclusions as to tale’s very nature. Are the ghosts the governess sees real, or are they figments of her quiet insanity?

The Turn of the Screw was originally published as a serial, and later went through many revisions by James himself. Though there aren’t any overt suggestion that James intended his novella to be anything but a simple ghost story, the ambiguity in the narrative has captured the imagination of generations of readers and critics.

The Turn of the Screw Reviews

Surprised Face with Open Mouth“I’ve seen countless adaptations and variations on this classic novel, but this is the first time I’m actually sitting down to read it, and it was a pretty enjoyable experience. Perfect Gothic mystery vibes in a remote country manor filled with uncannily cheery children, mysterious yet supportive servants, and horrifying ghostly shadows. The sisterhood with Mrs. Grose was unexpectedly touching. However it’s kinda repetitive and drags till about 40% in. We don’t get that nice creepy kid intensification till 60% in, but then we really get going. I appreciate how it’s less a setting of one person against paranormal odds, as is the modern thriller or action movie norm. Rather, it is an inevitable gathering stroke of fate into which said person has unwittingly stepped. And of course, love a healthy dose of unreliability in the narrator and ambiguity in the ending.”
