The Thirty-Nine Steps - Unabridged

By John Buchan & Kevin Theis
The Thirty-Nine Steps - Unabridged by John Buchan & Kevin Theis digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

"The Thirty-Nine Steps" is John Buchan's thrilling adventure novel of international intrigue and espionage set during the early days of the First World War.

When bored engineer Richard Hannay - an unflappable and quick-witted Scotsman - is visited by a friend fleeing the clutches of a German spy ring, he is suddenly drawn into a complex plot wherein Hannay must stop a murderous secret agent from crossing the English Channel and spilling his secrets to his German spymasters. (Hannay would go on to appear in a series of popular Buchan novels.)

An early example of "man-on-the-run" adventure fiction where a civilian is drawn into an international conspiracy (imitators include "North by Northwest" and "The Da Vinci Code"), "The Thirty-Nine Steps" has been adapted numerous times to the stage, screen, television and radio and is the basis for the hit Broadway play of the same name. It is presented here in its original and unabridged format.

About John Buchan

John Buchan (1875-1940) led a truly extraordinary and productive life. Not only was he a prolific writer - penning over a hundred books - but he also served as a barrister, an historian, a Union politician and, ultimately, Governor General of Canada. He was raised to the peerage for his government service by King George V and became a Baron, the Right Honorable Lord Tweedsmuir. He served in this post for the remainder of his life and even assisted in navigating the treacherous political waters surrounding the abdication of King Edward VIII. A Scotsman by birth, he was educated at Oxford and embarked on a writing career from an early age, publishing a number of works while still at school. Upon graduation, he began work as a barrister and quickly became private secretary to Alfred Milner, High Commissioner of South Africa, where he lived and soaked up material that he would later use in his novels. Buchan was primarily known for his adventure novels. An early success was "Prester John" (set in South Africa) but in 1915, he wrote the book that would make him famous: "The Thirty-Nine Steps." The protagonist for the book was Richard Hannay, an unflappable Scotsman who appeared in a number of subsequent Buchan stories. Buchan served as an intelligence officer in World War I, President of the Scottish Historical Society, Governor of the British Film Institute and the at last was made a Baron and appointed Governor of Canada. (The year before his appointment, Alfred Hitchcock adapted "The Thirty-Nine Steps" into a successful film.) In 1940, Buchan suffered a stroke and died shortly afterwards at age sixty-four and was given a state funeral. His books continue to enjoy a wide readership to this day and his most famous novel, "The Thirty-Nine Steps" was ultimately adapted into a hit Broadway play.
