“I read this one with my two boys (11 and 12) for our family book club. My oldest picked it up from the library purely based on the cover, so we went in with no expectations—other than a kid with some cool socks, lol. We ended up really enjoying Xavier’s journey as he set his sights on joining the legendary Scepter League, with a little help (and a lot of style) from his great-uncle Frankie’s socks.
My boys, who are both pretty quiet and shy, really connected with Xavier’s growth in confidence and self-acceptance. It was a great read, and we’re excited to check out more from this author!”

Kelly J. Baptist is the inaugural winner of the We Need Diverse Books short-story contest. Her story is featured in the WNDB anthology Flying Lessons & Other Stories and inspired her first full-length novel, Isaiah Dunn Is My Hero.
