The Sun Also Rises is a 1926 novel by American writer Ernest Hemingway, that portrays American and British expatriates who travel from Paris to the Festival of San Fermín in Pamplona to watch the running of the bulls and the bullfights.
The novel is a roman à clef: the characters are based on real people in Hemingway's circle, and the action is based on real events, particularly Hemingway's life in Paris in the 1920s and a trip to Spain in 1925 for the Pamplona festival and fishing in the Pyrenees.

“There were several times through this novel that phrases jumped off the page at me and I had to reread them because they were simply so unique. I think that’s Hemingway’s greatest strength, being unique. It allows us as reader to approach bars and beaches and city streets with fresh eyes.
I’m not sure I liked Brett. Like all the characters in this novel, she is lost and wandering around for meaning. Aside from choosing not to be a cougar, I didn’t see much growth in her.”
“DNF
I really wanted to like this book. Unfortunately, there are many reasons I do not. It is just quite boring overall. The entirety of the plot consists of a group of friends going out and spending money, drinking coffee and smoking cigarettes, eating lunch and having wine, eating dinner and drinking alcohol, drinking more coffee and smoking more cigarettes, going to bed, and then doing it all again. Occasionally, someone will go for a walk or go fishing or something. There are pages and pages of what seems to be pointless small talk. It is full of references to French and Spanish geography and landmarks that are completely unknown to me, making it super hard to place myself. I did not even get to the bull fighting, which I am bummed about. I am sure there is something I missed. The simplicity of it was very appealing to me at first, but lost me too quickly and easily.”
