Publisher Description

Summer has begun, the beach is calling . . .

. . . but Francesca Schnell is going nowhere. Four years ago, Francesca’s little brother, Simon, drowned when she should have been watching. Now she is about to turn sixteen, but guilt keeps her stuck in the past. Meanwhile, her best friend is moving on—with the boy Francesca secretly wants—and her father may be having an affair. Then Francesca begins babysitting Frankie Sky, a four-year-old who bears an almost eerie resemblance to Simon. She even wonders if Frankie could be Simon’s reincarnation. Their surprising friendship helps Francesca think she might begin to forgive herself, grow up, and even fall in love, whether or not she solves the riddle of Frankie Sky.

The Summer of Letting Go Reviews

3.5
“I was expecting a drama YA book about a girl and her best friend's boyfriend but this story is not about it. Basically we have Francesca, a soon-to-be 16 years old girl who has a crush on her best friend's boyfriend, lost her brother after he drowned, her mom is depressed, her dad is possibly cheating and suddenly a young kid appears in her life. There is so much to talk about. First, the romance is very subtle and probably what I liked the least. The way it was resolved wasn't so realistic but meh, didn't care about it much. Her family: it was so sad to see how her family made her feel guilty and lonely. I think this part was well written, not sugarcoating and showing different ways to cope with trauma. Her brother and the new kid, Frankie: Francesca thinks Frankie could be related to her brother. Kind of like, reincarnation of some kind. I loved Frankie, such an adorable kid. He was so brave and just won my heart. Frankie has some health problems but he's so adorable. In general I liked everything related to her doubts, fears, regrets and desires to become better. I liked Francesca, she was real and showed how we all have a bad side even when we try to be good. Also, her best friend is really nice. Loved her.”
