The Street

The Street by Ann Petry & Jones, Tayari digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

WITH A NEW INTRODUCTION FROM NEW YORK TIMES BEST-SELLING AUTHOR TAYARI JONES

“How can a novel’s social criticism be so unflinching and clear, yet its plot moves like a house on fire? I am tempted to describe Petry as a magician for the many ways that The Street amazes, but this description cheapens her talent . . . Petry is a gifted artist.” — Tayari Jones, from the Introduction

The Street follows the spirited Lutie Johnson, a newly single mother whose efforts to claim a share of the American Dream for herself and her young son meet frustration at every turn in 1940s Harlem. Opening a fresh perspective on the realities and challenges of black, female, working-class life, The Street became the first novel by an African American woman to sell more than a million copies.

“One of the most intriguing books I’ve picked up in the last year. The overall mood is tragic, as Lutie has to earn money, take care of her son, and avoid the toxicities of the street. Reading about the extreme racism of the time is eye opening and heart wrenching. Even though I’ve never struggled with what Lutie has been through, her determination, love for her son, and stance around her own morals makes her very relatable. The writing style is a bit confusing at the start since it switches from points of view between chapters and sometimes within chapters. After the first few chapters it’s much easier to understand and quite enjoyable. Each character had their own voice. Some of them I wanted to chase after and destroy, while others I wanted to shelter and love. The way each character is written is one of my favorite parts of the book. Every one of them has good traits and bad traits (though some of them have many many many bad traits) that makes them human. Some characters are very icky and disturbing. SPOILERSSS!!! Jones (the super) is the most disgusting person on the planet. The number of times I wish I could reach into the book and punch him until he was purple was over 10. Overall 10/10 book, I 100% recommend to anyone interested in something historical, sad, and very real.”
