The Straw King

By Danielle Paige
The Straw King by Danielle Paige digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

Once upon a time, the Scarecrow's only wish was to have a brain. This digital original novella is the fifth installment in the prequel arc to the edgy and thrilling New York Times bestsellers Dorothy Must Die and The Wicked Will Rise and follows the Scarecrow after he finally gets his wish.

In The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the Scarecrow received the gift of a brain from the Wizard and was appointed the new ruler of Oz. In The Straw King, the Scarecrow's tale takes a crooked turn when his reign is threatened. With faith in his newfound wisdom shaken, the Scarecrow will turn to anyone who can help—even if others have their own interests at heart.

The Straw King by Danielle Paige is a dark and compelling reimagining of a beloved classic and is perfect for fans of Cinder by Marissa Meyer, Beastly by Alex Flinn, and Wicked by Gregory Maguire.

Thumbs Up“CW: murder, blood, gun violence, fire, war This time we go waaaay back, and back to the Oz books with General Jinjur and the all-girl army! Except it's all wrong because she rides a moped and the girls have guns instead of knitting needles, and the violence gets pretty horrific. I appreciate the deep dive into Oz lore, but the author gets some things wrong too, like how the scarecrow's brains are made of sawdust, when the Wizard actually gave him bran and pins and needles for brains. Anyway, the climax is pretty great and then it leaves you on a slightly discordant note, foreshadowing the scary things that happen in the author's proper series.”
Beaming Face with Smiling Eyes“This was a nice novella in continuing the story of the oZ, I like that this was scarecrow focused and let you connect with the characters in a more detailed way”
“It was interesting to see who really is the 🫧 👑 🧠 brains behind the operation. The power the Scarecrow desperately seeks is all but a few casualties away in the war over the thrown. The Straw King is a perfect example of knowing better, but not enough wisdom to do better.”
