Publisher Description

One perfect island. Two rivals. A star-studded cast.

But underneath the glitter, disaster is brewing.

Summer, 1958. Vivienne Rhodes thinks she’s finally landed her break playing Helen of Troy in Apex Pictures’ big-budget epic, A Thousand Ships, an anticipated blockbuster meant to resurrect the failing studio. Naturally, she’s devastated when she arrives on the remote Italian island of Tavalli and finds herself cast as the secondary character, Cassandra—while her nemesis, the fiancé-stealing Lottie Lawrence, America’s supposed “sweetheart,” is playing the lead role instead.

The tension on set, though, turns deadly when the ladies discover that members of the crew are using the production as a front for something decidedly illegal—and that they are willing to kill to keep their dealings under wraps. When the two women find themselves on the run and holding key evidence, Vivienne and Lottie frantically agree to work together to deliver the proof to Interpol, hoping to protect both their lives and their careers.

Staying one step ahead of corrupt cops and looming mobsters, the archrivals flee across the seas. Their journey leads them into Monaco’s casinos, Grace Kelly’s palace, on a road trip through the Alps—even onto another film set, before a final showdown back on Tavalli, where the lives of the entire cast and crew hang in the balance. Vivienne and Lottie finally have the chance to be real heroines—to save the day, the film, maybe even each other—but only if they can first figure out how to share the spotlight.

The Starlets Reviews

3.0
“The story follows two of Hollywood's leading ladies as they start production on their studio's production of the story of Helen of Troy, but from the minute Vivienne Rhodes steps on set on a remote island of the coast of Italy she realises nothing is what it seems. Set in the late 1950's and the golden age of Hollywood epics, The author brings the glitz and glamour of the era and contrasts it with the barely disguised seediness and criminal going ons that were also of this time;, while the voice work of the narrator helped elevate my enjoyment of the story even further, feeling like I was in the midst of the action that was happening throughout. While I generally roll my eyes at stories that have two men fighting over one man, I appreciated how the conflict of the two female leads simmers, boils over and eventually cools into a loving friendship once they both realise the truth of what has been going on around them and I thought it was ingenious to use newspaper headlines to help advance the story and keep it's rapid pace, and not allow the plot to get bogged down in too many details. Thanks to Netgalley and Harpermuse for providing me with an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. All opinions are my own.”
“This was not the historical fiction novel I was expecting and I can't say that it was well-written either. In order to read/listen to this, you have to suspend A LOT of belief (which is not typically how I like my hist fic books) and just be willing to go along for the ride. I can't really say much about this because I don't really remember a lot of it. I don't even really know how to review it other than it was better than 1 ⭐..... but not much.”
