Publisher Description

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • From the bestselling author of The Night Circus, a timeless love story set in a secret underground world—a place of pirates, painters, lovers, liars, and ships that sail upon a starless sea.

Zachary Ezra Rawlins is a graduate student in Vermont when he discovers a mysterious book hidden in the stacks. As he turns the pages, entranced by tales of lovelorn prisoners, key collectors, and nameless acolytes, he reads something strange: a story from his own childhood.

Bewildered by this inexplicable book and desperate to make sense of how his own life came to be recorded, Zachary uncovers a series of clues—a bee, a key, and a sword—that lead him to a masquerade party in New York, to a secret club, and through a doorway to an ancient library hidden far below the surface of the earth. What Zachary finds in this curious place is more than just a buried home for books and their guardians—it is a place of lost cities and seas, lovers who pass notes under doors and across time, and of stories whispered by the dead. Zachary learns of those who have sacrificed much to protect this realm, relinquishing their sight and their tongues to preserve this archive, and also of those who are intent on its destruction.

Together with Mirabel, a fierce, pink-haired protector of the place, and Dorian, a handsome, barefoot man with shifting alliances, Zachary travels the twisting tunnels, darkened stairwells, crowded ballrooms, and sweetly soaked shores of this magical world, discovering his purpose—in both the mysterious book and in his own life.

Smiling Face with Heart-Eyes“I took a long while to marinate my feelings on this book. The longer I thought about it the more I loved it. I really enjoyed the Alice in Wonderland feel the whole thing had, it gave me a vibe of a story within a story. I was flipping between the adiobook and book-book and there were moments where I was staring blankly at a wall whole invested in what was happening. Now, normally I hate books with ambiguous ending but what really sold this was that we never truly find out if Zachary and Mirabel make it out.”

Smiling Face with Heart-Eyes“A new favourite book...the satisfaction is unmatched. The starless sea revolves around not a single character, not a single plot and not even a single story. Its a collection of events and fables and tales that beautifully entwine altogether by the end. I know this was a turn-off for many readers, but I personally enjoyed all of the stories and excerpts from the books. The fact that there was no connection between the present plot-line and all of these stories being thrown at us, was at times confusing and I see how it could be frustrating for a few people. But for me It was like reading fairytales and some how discovering that each one was tangled with the other. The charecters in this book are all layered and mysterious but at each one has their own story. Erin Morgenstern's writing is unparalleled. It slightly alters itself as we switch between the main-plot and the sub-stories but the one thing in common throughout the book is that Its transportive and immerging.”

Anxious Face with sweat“I’m a bit disappointed with this one 😞. I really enjoyed the night circus, but I felt like this one was just too abstract. I think if either the plot was more linear or if the writing wasn’t as symbolic then it would have been good. However, both of these elements at the same time was just a bit too much going on.”
