JOSEPH MATTSON is the author of the story collection Eat Hell and the novel Empty the Sun (A Barnacle Book), which was a finalist for the 2010 SCIBA Fiction Award. He lives in Los Angeles.

He is the winner of the 2010 PEN/Faulkner Award, the 2007 National Book Award for Young People’s Literature, the 2001 PEN/Malamud Award for Excellence in the Short Story, and a Special Citation for the 1994 PEN/Hemingway Award for Best First Fiction. Smoke Signals, the film he wrote and coproduced, won both the Audience Award and the Filmmakers Trophy at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival. Alexie lives with his family in Seattle.

Abbott received her Ph.D. in English and American literature from New York University and has taught at NYU, SUNY, and The New School. In 2013-14, she served as the John Grisham Writer in Residence at Ole Miss. Abbott also wrote the nonfiction book, The Street Was Mine: Masculinity in Hardboiled Fiction and Film Noir, and is the editor of A Hell of a Woman, an anthology of crime fiction. Her writing has appeared in: The New York Times, Salon.com, The Guardian, The Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, The Believer, and Los Angeles Review of Books.
