The Sparrow

By Mary Doria Russell
The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

A visionary work that combines speculative fiction with deep philosophical inquiry, The Sparrow tells the story of a charismatic Jesuit priest and linguist, Emilio Sandoz, who leads a scientific mission entrusted with a profound task: to make first contact with intelligent extraterrestrial life. The mission begins in faith, hope, and beauty, but a series of small misunderstandings brings it to a catastrophic end.

The Sparrow Reviews

4.0
“I rated this book before I read the author Q&A. No spoilers for the book here but spoiler on the author’s views ahead…. She wrote the book because she thinks Christopher Columbus gets a bad wrap and thinks he should be cut some slack 🙄🙄🙄 I am leaving my rating as 4.75 because that is truly my experience reading the book but after finding out the author’s inspiration to try and sympathize with colonizers I think of the book as 1 star. That being said, I find the well intentioned characters of the book have very little in common with the colonizer Columbus.”
