“Definitely interesting and a good intro to poetry. I personally just didn't find it very engaging.”
“I read this with the intention of beginning to patch up my poetry blindspot. I don’t read poetry, I don’t write poetry, but much how I’ve slowly been integrating literary fiction into my reading habits. I want to integrate poetry into my reading habits… to pad out my book total. But for real, I found this somewhat helpful, but, despite being a guide purportedly for beginners I still find myself woefully lost. But that is probably more due to my own lack of experience in the genre.
Hopefully though, once I make it into some of the poetry books I’ve been recommended, I’ll put to use the lessons learned here to appreciate the poems at more than a surface level. The book really pointed out how much more different poetry is from prose in how it’s meant to be read. And while that’s an obvious statement, I did shift my perspective a little bit, and with the myriad of examples in the book I feel like I got a baby grasp on the idea.”
“Pinskys guide to the sounds of poetry is a must read for the poetry student or avid poetry reader or casual poetry writer. Split into 5 chapters— Accent and Duration, Syntax and Line, Technical Terms and Vocal Realities, Like and Unlike Sounds, and Blank Verse and Free Verse—he teaches the reader how to hear the intricacies of both classic and modern poetry. Must read!”
