“interesting read about “patterns of differentiated deodorization.” it seems that the book is responding to the covid-era moment of calling for better air conditioning, and hsu is asking the question of what happens when certain (ie middle class, corporate, capitalist, white heteropatriarchal) spaces are stripped of noticeable odors, and as airspaces become conditioned. the narrative of risk perception promised by the title and in the introduction kind of gets lost in hsu’s tight analyses. this is the biggest strength of the book: the sheer number of compelling and fascinating case studies!!
there are a lot of terms he develops, some his own and others derived from scholars in new materialism (atmo-orientalism, differentiated deodorization, trans-corporeality, and toxicity are the big ones). even as this was incredibly engaging, at times it just felt like there was a lot happening in each chapter. perhaps this was an attempt to make the form match the nebulous/ineffable nature of scent and atmosphere? unsure, but is a lot to chew on here.”
