The Siren and The Specter
By Jonathan JanzPublisher Description
"Worth every bit of praise it has received so far, The Siren and the Specter should definitely be on your top 10 list of horror books." — The Splatter Geist
Goodreads Choice Award finalist for Best Horror
When David Caine, a celebrated skeptic of the supernatural, is invited by an old friend to spend a month in “the most haunted house in Virginia,” he believes the case will be like any other. But the Alexander House is different.
Built by a 1700s land baron to contain the madness and depravity of his eldest son, the house is plagued by shadows of the past and the lingering taint of bloodshed. David is haunted, as well. For twenty-two years ago, he turned away the woman he loved, and she took her life in sorrow.
And David suspects she’s followed him to the Alexander House.

“I've always been a skeptic when it comes to ghosts, sirens, aliens, etc. This was an enjoyable story with some mystery and suspense but I'm still a skeptic.”

“Somehow, despite all my years of reading horror, I managed to miss the gem that is Jonathan Janz. When this book came to my door, the cover art was the first thing to really grab my attention (just look at it!) Reading the premise only brought further joy, as I am always here for a good ghost story. 'Skeptic spends time in haunted house' may be one of the most classic of all the paranormal tropes, but Janz brings something new and thrilling to the table with The Siren and the Specter. From the moment I opened to the first page, I couldn't put it down.
The truly great thing about this book is how the author weaves the supernatural with the human element. His protagonist, although not a particularly lovable character, is well-developed and compelling. While I can't say I would want to be friends with him, I did care about the outcome of his situation and I wanted everything to work out in his favor. Furthermore, I can honestly say that the most unsettling aspects of this book were related to the other (human) characters more often than the supernatural entities. It is truly disturbing how often the humans were scarier than the ghosts.
I am also always a fan of a book that can make me question whether the supernatural activity was ever real, or whether the main character is too much in their own head. This book left me feeling so uneasy from beginning to end, but I honestly wasn't sure where it was headed for so long. I questioned the motives of every character, and like the mc, doubted the believability of the haunting.
The Siren and the Specter is beautifully layered, with every fragment sliding perfectly into place in the end. Everything had a purpose and played its role just right, leaving me feeling satisfied.
This book was my first by Janz, but it certainly won't be my last! If you're looking for a creepy ghost story filled with originality, well-written characters, and fluid story-telling that will keep you up at night, then this book is for you. 4.5/5 Highly recommended.”
