“I read this with my 9 year old, and we were both completely captivated. Kate and her little brother, Tom, lead very uninteresting lives, until their estranged Uncle Herbert—who is “very rich and totally irresponsible”—shows up on Kate’s eleventh birthday.
With a steam engine.
Thus begins this fast-paced adventure in which Kate and Tom are thrust into the new, exciting but weighty responsibility of conducting a train that takes (talking) endangered animals to new habitats all over the world.
Kate’s character was very relatable for my daughter, as I believe would be the case for most tweens—smart, sometimes unmotivated, a bit snarky, but secretly longing for magic and a sense of purpose. In getting to know the animals and the ins and outs of the enchanted, talking train, Kate discovers that she is capable of far more than she had hoped. She learns to look beyond herself to see the plight of others and join in becoming a small part of the solution.
This is the author’s first middle grade book, and the second we finished it, we were researching to see whether he has plans to write more so we can gobble them up. His writing is completely engrossing, in the style of C. S. Lewis and Roald Dahl. My 9 year old could have read this easily by herself, but I really loved sharing it with her. It is a fantastic read aloud.”
