INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER

"A delicately woven novel with an utterly original premise, it ensnared me from the very first page.” — Emilia Hart, bestselling author of Weyward

From the acclaimed author of the #1 international bestseller The Binding—a captivating story of gothic suspense about a powerful family, the magical and dangerous silk their fortune is built upon, and the exploitative history they are desperately trying to hide.

1820: Sophia Ashmore-Percy reluctantly accompanies her husband James to a remote Greek island, where he searches for rare biological specimens. Once there, however, she sets on her own voyage of discovery—stumbling across the very creature he is looking for, making an unexpected connection with a local woman, and ultimately reconsidering her marriage, life, and own desires.

Decades later, audiologist Henry Latimer is sent to the home of industrialist Sir Edward Ashmore-Percy and tasked with curing the man’s young daughter, Philomel, of her deafness. But Henry, eager to escape a troubled past, quickly becomes obsessed with the fascinating nature of Sir Edward’s business: spinning silk with a rare and magical breed of spiders. The extraordinary silk shields sound, offering respite from bustling streets and noisy neighbors. The result is instant tranquility, as wearers experience a soothing calmness. Yet, those within earshot of the outward-facing silk are subjected to eerie murmurs that amplify with proximity. Bystanders suffer the consequences of this unnerving phenomenon, manifesting in physical and mental afflictions ranging from headaches and drowsiness to severe cases of madness.

As Henry becomes entangled in the allure of the silk and Sir Edward’s charm, he glimpses a more sinister family history. The closer he ventures into the inner circle of Carthmute House, the more he unravels the horrifying underbelly of the silk business.

With Bridget Collins’s signature, stunning prose, The Silence Factory is an equally enthralling and unsettling gothic story about complicity, desire, and corruption—a novel to lose yourself in.

The Silence Factory Reviews

“This started out really strong. The storyline, time jumps, and the setting immediately caught my attention. I loved the Greek mythology references and paintings. I couldn’t wait to see where this story was going but somewhere along the way this book just lost me. It started to drag and the characters became more and more unlikeable. I understand that this book was to show the dark side of industry and invention, and the people it hurts along the way but I feel like the way it was done missed the mark. Henry’s character was chosen specifically because he’s vulnerable and easily manipulated but at the same time it’s hard to read the book from his perspective. He is clearly missing all of the red flags and is extremely unlikeable. On top of that the two main characters of in the past portions leave much to be desired. Honestly, the only characters I cared about was Philomel and Miss Felding and we barely get any time with them. I feel like what I wanted from this book was an even greater connection to mythology, more of explanations about the silk, the spiders, and the rituals of the past. What we got was a book used to show how easily people can be corrupted and enchanted by greed. Unfortunately, this one was a let down for me.”
“Beautifully written and singular tale. I really enjoyed the guessing and intrigue of it all. The underlying thread of deaf culture was really fascinating.”
“I really wanted to like this book. It was very unique and it was written in a way that was unnerving and mysterious. I enjoyed that because it fit the story. I expected more information about the spider silk and its effects. In the end, I was just questioning what type of book this was and what was the point.”
Rolling on the Floor Laughing Face“This book was a pleasant surprise. It wasn't exactly what I thought it was going to be but I really liked it regardless. I liked the character development Henry had. And I really loved the Sophia diary part. And I like the queer relationship representation in the book as well. This book is suspenseful at times but the gothic literature really shines through most of the time. I would say this book is best in the middle through the end. That's when everything starts to ramp up. I did like how it ended and I think overall I had a really good time with this book.”
